ChatGPT Ads Finally Arrives in Brazil and Mexico, With the First Ads Already Running

The channel Brazil and Mexico have been waiting on for months finally has a date. OpenAI wrote to its advertisers that the ChatGPT Ads launch in both countries arrives next week, and in Brazil the first ads are already running as of August 4. After months of loose talk about "the next markets," the date now comes in writing, straight from OpenAI to whoever is going to pay the bill.

On July 28 we wrote that the channel was still switched off in the region. Ten days later that changed: Brazil has ads in pilot and OpenAI confirmed in writing that the commercial launch arrives this week in both countries. Not every layer of the channel moved at the same speed, and it's worth understanding what each announcement actually means.

What Already Moved, Layer by Layer

The channel comes together in four layers, and no two of them moved at the same time.

  • Advertiser account: open in both countries since May 7. Eligibility depends on where the business is registered, not where the users are.
  • Ads to local users: running in Brazil since August 4, in pilot, unconfirmed in Mexico.
  • Commercial launch, being able to buy: in both countries, according to OpenAI's August 5 email, "the coming week."
  • Measurement: no dedicated attribution partner in Brazil yet, though the same email added support for Triple Whale (with Sonar Optimize) and Hightouch's conversion API, without clarifying which markets they cover.

We already wrote about the first countries where ChatGPT Ads ran back when Mexico and Brazil were still "next up." This note updates that timeline to the point where the channel finally has a date.

The Date That Matters Is the One OpenAI Sent to Whoever Pays

The August 4 coverage (Meio & Mensagem, propmark, and Exame, with an on-the-record quote from Dave Dugan, OpenAI's Head of Global Ads Solutions) describes an early phase: ads visible to Brazilian users on the Free and Go plans, over 18, no ads on paid plans, with a closed group of agencies (WPP, Publicis Groupe, Omnicom, Monks, and BETC Havas) running the first campaigns. According to propmark, brands are currently getting only impressions and clicks, and self-serve isn't available yet: it goes live, in the outlet's own words, "in the coming days." That coverage comes out of a briefing organized by OpenAI itself, with a quote from an OpenAI executive at an OpenAI event: it counts as context for the pilot, not as the official launch announcement.

One day later, the product email OpenAI sent to advertisers put it with a date of its own: "ChatGPT Ads are coming soon to Brazil and Mexico: In the coming week, we will launch ChatGPT Ads in Brazil and Mexico." Both countries, in the same sentence, straight from OpenAI to whoever is going to pay the bill: the source that matters for planning.

The Rest of the Package Arrived in the Same Email

The email also brings already-confirmed product changes with no connection to Brazil or Mexico: oCPC in beta for product feed campaigns, the ability to clone an existing CPC campaign into oCPC format or create them in bulk, dynamic URL macros for tracking ({campaign_id}, {ad_group_id}, {ad_id}, {ad_account_id}), pixel validation diagnostics, and a multi-product carousel still in testing. None of it comes with a deadline, except one.

August 17 Is the Date That Demands a Decision Now

Starting August 17, 2026, Automatic Advanced Matching becomes the default on pixels that are already installed, not on new ones. In Brazil and Mexico buying is only just opening, so the change carries less weight there for now. But it does ask something of any team already running ChatGPT Ads in the markets where the channel has worked since February: anyone who doesn't want advanced matching turned on automatically just has to disable it before that date, from Tools, Conversions, Data Source, Edit pixel.

How to Get Ready for the Window That Opens This Week

"The coming week" is the best official information available today, not a guarantee, so it's worth resolving now whatever doesn't depend on that date: opening the advertiser account, which has no campaign cost though it does take completing the business registration, and getting the product feed and creatives ready so the first days of buying aren't spent sorting out the basics. If the business already runs ChatGPT Ads in another market, the August 17 decision gets resolved this week, not when Brazil opens.

For bigger teams, the data in the press coverage (specific agencies, user tiers, volume per ad) is useful as context, not as a benchmark: it's a closed pilot of five agencies, with no independent measurement yet. The first layer of external measurement for ads inside an answer engine only arrived in July, months after the channel launched in its first markets, and until something similar covers Brazil, any number about the pilot is the version told by whoever is selling the channel.

What's still unknown matters as much as what's confirmed: Mexico has no confirmation of ads beyond the open account, Brazil has no exact self-serve date beyond "coming days," the pilot numbers can't be independently verified, and there's no public detail yet on the product feed format the channel will require or on the pricing model that will apply in Brazil and Mexico once buying opens. This timeline is going to keep moving, as OpenAI's dates for the region already have before: the note that opened this category on the blog already warned that measuring inside an answer engine was going to take more than one pass. For now, what changed is that the channel finally has a date.
